This is an intermediate course for experienced zSeries system programmers and Linux or UNIX system administrators, who need the skills to install Linux on zSeries or S/390.
 
prerequisites
 
 
An understanding of both Linux and xSeries is required.

If you have xSeries experience and need Linux understanding, you should take: Linux Basics - A xSeries Perspective (HLX13)
If you have Linux experience and need xSeries understanding, you should take: An Introduction to the z/OS Environment (ES050)
The lab exercises run under VM, so VM knowledge is helpful, but is not required. This course does not address VM installation. Installation tasks for implementing VM for use by Linux guests are covered in: Installing, Configuring and Servicing z/VM for Linux Guests (ZV062)

The course materials cover SUSE(R) LINUX Enterprise Server 9.
 
hands-on labs
 
 
Ten labs are included to address starting the initial driver Linux system, installing the target Linux for zSeries system, using Yet Another Setup Tool (YaST) and RedHat Package Manager (RPM) locate and install packages, implmenting K Desktop Environment (KDE) as an X-application, configuring Hummingbird Exceed as an X-Server, using Virtual Network Computing (VNC) viewer and Cygwin, installing and configuring Samba as a file server, installing and configuring Network File System (NFS) for zSeries, installing and configuring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client, installing and configuring a guest Linux connection to another Linux, and making configuration changes to the Kernel.
