9 Steps to VMCE Success: How to Become a Veeam Certified Engineer

How to Become a Veeam Certified Engineer

Have you considered a career in the computer industry? Did you know that the current average base pay for Veeam Certified Engineers is $126,759? If this career path piques your interest, keep reading to learn what steps to take to become a Veeam Certified Engineer.

What Is a Veeam Certified Engineer?

Holding a Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) certification demonstrates in-depth knowledge of this product, giving employers documentation that you have the right skills to meet their needs. This includes expertise in how to properly deploy, configure and administer Veeam solutions.

VMCE’s offer many benefits to employers by optimizing productivity and security, which helps reduce operating costs and increase the business's return on investment.

How to Become a Veeam Certified Engineer

To become a VMCE, you must pass the VMCE certification exam. The following nine steps will prepare you to achieve this certification:

1. Complete the Veeam Availability Suite v10: Configuration and Management Course

Veeam Availability Suite v10: Configuration and Management is a three-day course that targets experienced IT professionals wishing to complete the VMCE certification process. This course helps you develop a strong understanding of virtualization, storage, servers and networking, and focuses on configuring, managing and supporting Veeam solutions.

Another valuable course is the two-day VMCE Advanced Design and Optimization training, which teaches the skills needed to correctly size, scope, design, optimize, automate and troubleshoot a deployment of the Veeam Availability Suite. This course also addresses security, compliance issues and audit criteria.

2. Watch the Feature Overview Webinar for v10

Released in February 2020, the Veeam Availability Suite v10 video  provides information about how to make data more available, portable and extensible.

3. Read the What’s New in v10 Documentation

Backing up and storing data securely is a prime focus of businesses today. Designed to protect cloud, virtual and physical data systems, Veeam® Backup & Replication provides a flexible, simple and reliable solution.

The What’s New in v10 document focuses on Veeam® Backup & Replication 10, offering protection for network-attached storage, ransomware protection and enhanced data portability. You’ll learn about Veeam’s scalable architecture, data source support and simple offsite backup. Other features include an efficient forever-incremental backup engine and object storage integration. Veeam also has innovative storage-agnostic changed file tracking and storage snapshots support.

4. Read the Release Notes for v10

The Release Notes for v10 provide current information about system requirements, as well as details about technical support, online resources and documentation. You’ll also learn how to install and upgrade these systems.

5. Read the User Guide (Hyper-V)

The User Guide (Hyper-V) explains how to generate image-level backups, which is useful for virtual, physical and cloud machines. It also explains how to restore data from each type of environment, and you’ll gain an understanding of data transfers and resource consumption technology.

These strategies help to reduce storage costs and accelerate recovery time in the event of a disaster. Additionally, a centralized console allows for the administration of all supported platforms. You can also schedule automated routines for data protection and integration operations.

6. Read the User Guide (vSphere)

The vSphere User Guide defines technical terms for virtualized platforms using VMware and explains how this product works to create the infrastructure for virtualization. It includes information about the platform's complete data protection and data recovery solutions after a disaster. You’ll also learn about integrating alert systems and creating compliance reports.

7. Review the Official Study Guide

The official study guide for VMCE certification provides an overview of the certification exam. Prior to taking the VMCE certification exam, you must complete the six steps described above or hold a previous certification, and should have over six months of experience working with a Veeam Availability Suite.

The exam covers the following eight areas:

  • Key concepts of a successful backup strategy (2%)
  • Building backup capabilities (38%)
  • Building replication capabilities (10%)
  • 3-2-1 strategy (4%)
  • Testing backups and replications (18%)
  • Restoring from a backup (10%)
  • Recovery from a replica (8%)
  • Monitoring and reporting (10%)

The exam contains 50 multiple-choice and multiple-response items. You have one hour to complete the test and must achieve a minimum score of 70 percent to pass.

This exam is only available in English, but you may take an additional 30 minutes to complete it if you're testing in a non-local language. The VMCE 2020 test can be taken at any Pearson VUE testing center.

8. Study Independently

It’s important to spend time studying outside of the sources listed above to increase your chances of passing the exam. For example, a practice lab can help you gain more hands-on experience.

9. Take Practice Exams

There are several practice exam options to help you prepare for the VMCE certification exam. These include:

  • The VMCE Practice Exam: One version of this test uses scenario situations to help you work on high-level problem-solving skills. Another version of the VMCE practice exam is a bit more challenging with questions that are more direct than scenario-based. Both versions include 50 questions and must be completed in one hour. The goal of both tests is to find your weaker areas so you can improve your knowledge in them prior to taking the official exam.
  • Veeam Partner Resources: Veeam partner resources offer tests that mimic the VMCE certification exam by following the same format as the actual exam. You can take these tests through Pearson VUE testing centers.
