What to Know About Veeam Availability Suite v10 Backups for Nutanix AHV v2

Veeam recently released both their Availability Suite v10 and Backup for Nutanix AHV v2. With this, Veeam also announced their new updated Veeam Availability Suite v10: Configuration and Management course. There are many impressive enhancements in both these products, a few of which I’d like to point out here. While many of these enhancements are familiar — such as instant recovery from any Veeam backup job to VMware as well as the ability to backup NAS shares directly — I’d like to focus on a few of my favorite additions to these two products.

The first two additions I’ll touch on are part of the Veeam Availability Suite, and are discussed in the course. The last addition deals with the enhancements in Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV v2, and is not covered in the new course.

The first of these enhancements takes additional advantage of the Cloud Tier functionality (capacity), which was first introduced in Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4. There is a new feature here that — when enabled — will copy a backup job from the performance tier to object storage as soon as the backup job completes to the performance tier. With this, the 3-2-1 rule of backups is met almost immediately:

  • Three copies of the data: The original virtual machine (VM), the performance backup (local) and the Cloud Tier copy (remote)
  • Two media types: Local and object storage
  • One off site: In the Cloud Tier (object storage)

Furthermore, there are additional integrations with support for object lock to prevent ransomware attacks on these backups.

The next enhancement is made possible by the significant improvements to the Instant Recovery engine.  Due to the speed at which Instant Recovery works, Veeam now supports the ability to do Multi-VM Instant Recovery. If there is a significant failure in the data center, it is possible to select all necessary application and environment components on the same platform and perform a single Multi-VM Instant Recovery to restore them all.

The final enhancement deals with some of the new integrations and features provided by the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV v2. As an instructor for Veeam, Nutanix and VMware courses, these enhancements are very exciting. Veeam now supports deploying and configuring the AHV Backup Proxy right from Veeam Backup & Replication. In addition to this, we can now restore VMs backed up on other platforms, Hyper-V, VMware and the Veeam Agents for Windows or Linux to AHV. This is an extremely important feature for those considering a migration to the AHV platform, as they will not need to keep other platforms available for restore purposes of their long-term backup strategy.

I’ve only scratched the surface of what Veeam can now do.
