This course teaches Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using IBM Rhapsody and SysML.

This three-day, hands-on class interweaves training in SysML diagram notation for systems engineering with tool-based labs in Rhapsody focused on modeling core structural and behavior diagrams and tracing to requirements.

At the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of core notations in SysML such as use case, activity, sequence, block definition, and internal block diagrams and an appreciation of different methods used to construct systems engineering models. Students will understand how to get the best out of Rhapsody and how models are controlled and stored using properties and units. They will come away with a host of tips and tricks for building the different diagrams in Rhapsody. Additionally, students will gain foundation knowledge in how Rhapsody models import or trace to requirements in external sources such as DOORS or DOORS Next.

OBJECTIVES:
Introduction
Overview of SysML Diagrams
• Overview of diagrams and how they relate to each other
• Navigating between elements (e.g., structural elements to behavioral diagrams)
• Appreciation of tables and matrices and their usage
Exploring a Model with Rhapsody
• Rhapsody user interface essentials and how diagrams relate to each other
Use Cases and Requirements
• Appreciation of use case, requirements, and use case step relationships
• An appreciation of activity models for analysis
• Tips for creating diagrams
Rhapsody Profiles and Properties
• Creating a model from scratch, including properties and profiles
• Appreciation of how to set up and use the tool effectively with profiles and properties
Working with External Requirements
Gateway Synchronizer for Requirements Sync (optional/swap-in)
• Understand Rhapsody’s integrations with requirements managed via Gateway synchronizer
RMM and Remote Resources for Requirements Linking (optional/swap-in)
• Overview of the IBM Jazz platform and remote requirements; OSLC links to Jazz, RTC Eclipse
• Accessing models by web-client for review purposes, etc.
Activity Modeling
• Using activity modeling for system analysis
• Different ways of viewing traceability to requirements, including diagrams, tablets, and matrices
Tables and Matrices
• Requirement traceability essentials, including matrices, and tables
• Tables and matrices
• Appreciation of more advanced techniques (e.g., context patterns)
Navigating Rhapsody Units
• Understanding how projects are stored and how to open them
Understanding OO Relations for BDD or Class Diagrams
• Understanding relations in UML/SysML: composition, association, generalization, aggregation, dependencies
• Understanding use of composite structure for hierarchical decomposition of systems, including ports, parts, and connectors
• Controlling compartments and associated display options
• Tips for getting diagrams out of Rhapsody quickly and controlling printing
• Interaction Modeling (Sequence Diagrams)
• Sequence diagram modeling for defining interfaces between elements
• Appreciating state-machines and their relationship with sequence diagrams
Ports and Interfaces
• Understanding difference between port types, including pros and cons

FOLLOW-ON COURSES:
Class may be extended one day to cover additional topics, such as state machine modeling, Rhapsody Model Manager, more detail on storage of models, etc.

AUDIENCE:
Systems engineers or software engineers using Rhapsody and SysML to model software-intensive systems. This course teaches SysML rather than UML although the core diagrams do overlap both languages. This course assumes no prior knowledge of SysML or modeling.

PREREQUISITES:
Basic understanding of systems engineering and requirements management.
