CLEARWATER, Fla., February 6, 2023 - ExitCertified, a Shyft Global Services company, has released the 2023 State of IT Training Report, which provides a detailed analysis of the IT training and skill development strategy and results of organizations, mainly enterprises. Based on a survey of 420 senior-level IT professionals across various industries, this report highlights various findings regarding their IT training, skill shortages, budgets, and plans for upskilling through 2025.

With more than two-thirds of surveyed respondents experiencing skills shortages, which are hindering their digital transformation, it’s important to understand what companies are doing to understand where these gaps lie and how to close them. Companies see this lack of skills as a long-term problem. More than 50% of IT leaders who participated in our survey predicted that the existing skills gap will increase between now and 2025.

Some of the top findings of the report are listed below.

Finding 1

Over 60% of surveyed companies plan to increase their IT training budgets, and about a quarter of these companies are planning to increase it by more than 10%. Of both large and mid-sized companies, 70% said they plan to increase their budget in 2023, compared to just 50% of small companies.

Finding 2

While overall company budget constraints may be a reason that some companies don’t plan to increase their training budget, the survey found that a lack of skilled staff is the most dominant factor hindering digital transformation. Of the 420 respondents, 23.8% said their biggest barrier to obtaining their desired state of digital transformation is a shortage of skilled personnel. The lack of trained IT staff was found to have adverse effects on digital transformation timelines as 32% of respondents said they are already reporting delays in transforming their IT projects by six to 10 months and 16% reported delays of 11 to 20 months.

Finding 3

Companies said they face other barriers impeding digital transformation: work pressure and budget constraints. Of those IT professionals surveyed, 44.3% stated that the biggest barrier their IT staff faces is finding the time to get trained because they already feel as if they are under too much pressure at work to produce.

Finding 4

The skills gap is expected to increase through 2025. Over 50% of IT leaders who participated in the ExitCertified survey predicted that the existing skills gap will widen further during the coming years through 2025.

Finding 5:

IT leaders see an increase in staff productivity after receiving IT training. More than 70% of respondents saw a significant increase in staff productivity after IT training. More than 60% of the surveyed companies said that their staff realized higher job satisfaction through training.
